Community Engagement

The Our Seas Coalition

SIFT is an active member of the Our Seas Coalition – a coalition which brings together over 160 coastal businesses, community organisations, recreational and environmental groups from all around Scotland. Collectively, we campaign for urgent action to recover the health of marine wildlife and fisheries, specifically by calling on the Scottish Government to:

  • Implement a sustainable low impact fishing zone for at least 30% of inshore waters;
  • Roll-out effective vessel tracking on all fishing boats;
  • Ensure a just transition for affected fishing sectors.

Supporting grassroots conservation

Working with Flora and Fauna International, SIFT helped establish a community group in Sutherland, with the specific aim to empower the community to lead marine conservation efforts in their local area. Community-led action to address biodiversity loss and climate change impacts have been shown to be more effective, less contentious, and reap the best returns for nature and people.
